Henry Ford famously declared, "Whether you think you can or you think you can't, you're right." How Limiting Beliefs Hold You Back

Think about the belief, "I'm not creative enough to start that business" or "I'm too old to find love." Where do these powerful beliefs come from? In my 30+ years as a social worker and counsellor, I've seen they are often more than just habits, they can be echoes of our past.

Beliefs like these are often inherited from others or created through some sort of crisis - like a relationship ending or the loss of a loved one. They become stories we tell ourselves to make sense of our world. These stories then form invisible barriers that prevent you from pursuing and reaching for your goals. The beautiful truth is, these stories can be rewritten. The moment you start to question them, you open the door to real change.

Let me share an example. I once worked with a client who, after a difficult job loss, held the firm belief that they were 'past their prime' and would never find meaningful work again. They'd told themselves this story so often, it felt like an undeniable fact. By gently challenging this narrative together, we found it came from a fear of failure, not from reality. Today, they are doing well in a new career, at one time they thought was impossible.

Here are some powerful strategies to help you break your own “can't” barrier:

1. Find Your Negative Beliefs

Take time to think about the voice in your head. What are the recurring statements that tell you something is impossible? Write them down, and look at where they came from. Often, you will find they are not based on what you can really do, but are echoes of old habits or things you were taught.

2. Challenge the Narrative

Ask yourself tough questions: Why do I believe this to be true? Who or what made me think this way? By questioning the basis of your limitations, you start to see them as just ideas, not solid facts. This is your first step toward rewriting your story.

3. Replace “Can’t” with “Can”

Change your way of thinking by choosing to focus on what you can do, not what you can't. Replace thoughts like “I can’t” with “I can try” or “I will learn.” Over time, this small shift in language will help retrain your mind to see possibilities instead of roadblocks.

4. Build a Growth Mindset

Start to believe that your abilities are not set in stone, but can be learned over time. Every challenge is a chance to grow. Having a growth mindset helps you see setbacks as valuable lessons, not as failures you can't get over.
